Idaho Approves Wolf Trapping in 2010

July 10, 2010

This week, the Idaho Fish and Game Commission approved the use of trapping to harvest wolves for the upcoming wolf season in the state.  The preliminary approval does not set specific wolf trapping regulations, but simply approves trapping as a method of take.  Detailed seasons and regulations pertaining to wolf trapping would be specified prior to the beginning of the season.

If the wolf trapping season becomes a reality, Idaho would become the first state in the lower 48 to allow wolf trapping in the modern era.  This would provide an incredible opportunity for trappers in Idaho while helping accomplish the state’s wolf management goals.

[...] Trapping Today refers to the move as a great opportunity saying, “This would provide an incredible opportunity for trappers in Idaho while helping accomplish the state’s wolf management goals.” I agree with Jeremiah if it is allowed it will help but the deck is stacked against such a move with much of the reality of it happening in the hands of fish and game. I disagree with Roy Reed. It’s not fun, it’s barbaric. It’s one thing to kill a beaver just so someone can make a hat, or to kill a fox so someone can have a fur-lined collar on their coat, but wolves are keystone predators and extremely important for maintaining a healthy ecosystem. Wolves are not small mammals whose fur is used for some (vain) purpose. No one is using wolf fur for any product. Wolves are classified as big game animals. How come it’s not allowed to set traps for Elk? Trapping wolves is simply about killing wolves because some people think it’s sport to kill wildlife and/or that wild life doesn’t have a right to exist unless humans say so. How can trapping a wolf be considered sporting? It can’t. It’s just barbaric.

Got something to say?
