Nowadays people love convenience, and trapping is no exception. When you’re getting outfitted to start trapping, it can be difficult, confusing and time consuming to decide what you need, and get it all ordered. Thankfully, some of the major trapping supply companies have put together starter kits to outfit a trapper from scratch. And interestingly, in addition to the convenience of the starter kits, they’re also a great buy. Most offer a significant discount from the price you’d pay if you had to buy each item separately. That’s part of why these kits have become so popular.
There are starter kits for all kinds of trapping, including species specific kits for coyote, raccoon and beaver, to general predator or water trapping kits. Here’s a brief overview of some trapping starter kits currently on the market.
Coyote Trapping Starter Kits
F&T sells a coyote trapping starter kit for around $170. The kit includes all the gear you need to run 6 coyote sets. This is perfect for someone looking to experiment with coyote trapping around home or on the farm and learn the ropes. You get 6 Duke #2 coilspring traps with offset jaws. These are an affordable entry level trap – good to get started with, but certainly not the best choice for long term use in high numbers trapping. These come with 6 Wolf Fang earth anchors with cables, and a cable stake driver. You also get trap wax and logwood dye to treat the traps, j-hooks to fasten them, and a pack of write-you-own trap tags. To help make sets, you get a trapper’s hammer to dig trap beds and pound stakes, a drill bit to make dirt holes, a trowel for bigger holes, a dirt sifter and a couple pairs of gloves. Every trapper needs lure and bait, and this kit provides bait from Lesel Reuwsaat and lure from Jeff Dunlap, along with some coyote urine. And to teach you how to use all the stuff, you get Dunlap’s “Coyote Trapping for Beginners” instructional DVD.
PCS Outdoors offers three tiers of coyote trapping starter kits: Basic, Standard, and Deluxe.
If you’re looking for a more affordable coyote starter kit, PCS Outdoors Basic Kit is the one for you. For less than $110, you can get outfitted with a similar setup as the F&T kit, except with only 3 traps. These are #1.75 Duke coilspring traps, anchored with PCS’s Au Sable earth anchors and driver, which are very similar to the Wolf Fangs. You get a trowel to dig holes, but have to provide your own hammer to pound in the stakes. Trap wax and dye are included, as well as a dirt sifter and trap tags, as well as sheep’s wool – a common lure holder and coyote attractant. You get a couple of bottles of Lenon’s coyote lure and a pint of coyote urine. To get you started is John Chagnon’s Canine Instructional Trapping DVD.
The PCS standard coyote trapping kit (just under $200) includes six traps, which are Sleepy Creek #1.75, and six cable stakes. In addition to all of the accessories in the Basic kit, it also includes a sod digging hoe, some extra lure and a pint of Caven’s predator bait.
The PCS deluxe coyote trapping kit costs just under $300, but you get some real value for the price. Instead of Duke or Sleepy Creek traps, you get six MB 550 traps, the standard in coyote traps on the market today – a top quality trap that’s ready to use right out of the box. You get all of the accessories included in the Standard kit, with several extras, including three 4 oz bottles of Lenon’s lure and an extra fur handling DVD.
Fox Pro Snares sells a starter kit very similar to F&T’s, but at a slightly lower price. It also includes Duke #2’s and Wolf Fang stakes, as well as most of the same other components of F&T’s kit. It includes Hawbaker’s bait and lure, and does not include an instructional DVD.
Bobcat Trapping Starter Kits
Bobcats are bringing big money these days, and the big supply dealers have put together starter kits for new trappers looking to catch cats.
Similar to the coyote kits, PCS offers three tiers of bobcat trapping kits – basic, standard and deluxe.
The PCS basic kit is very similar to the basic coyote trapping kit, except that the traps are three #3 Duke coilsprings. Bobcat lure is included, as well as Ray Milligan’s bobcat trapping book.
The standard bobcat kit include six #3 Sleepy Creek traps, a couple 4 oz jars of bobcat lure, two DVD’s and the Milligan book, for a price of just under $200.
Similar to the deluxe coyote trapping starter kit, this bobcat kit includes Minnesota Brand traps, this time MB 650’s, one of the better bobcat traps on the market. If you’re in the western U.S., a single bobcat can pay for the cost of the whole kit!
For around $170, you can get F&T’s bobcat trapping starter kit. With six #2 Duke coilspring traps and all the same accessories, it’s very similar to the coyote kit. You get Lesel Reuwsaat’s bobcat trapping instructional DVD, one of Lee’s cat lures and Jeff Dunlap’s bobcat lure and bait.
Raccoon Trapping Starter Kits
There are a few different ways to get started coon trapping, and you can go the foothold or dogproof route, or a combination of the two. Footholds are very effective, but dog proof traps can be used near homes and recreation trails in residential areas without worry about catching the neighbor’s dog.
Fox Pro Snares sells a coon starter kit with three 1.5 coilspring traps and coon bait and lure, some wire and gloves for a little over $60.
F&T’s Dog Proof Raccoon Trapping Starter Kit provides trappers a great starting with DP’s. For around $110, you get 5 Freedom Brand FB1 DP’s, stakes, driver and other accessories. Jeff Dunlap’s DP coon bait and Gary Schumann’s “Raccoon Riot” DVD are included.
PCS offers three tiers of DP coon starter kits. The basic kit includes four DP’s, one of each kind. This provides a great opportunity to try out several different kinds of DP’s to see which type you prefer. You get one each of: PCS Featherlight DP, Duke DP, Bridger T3 DP, and Diablo DP. You also get some DP bait, Lenon’s raccoon lure, John Chagnon’s water trapping DVD, and other accessories.
