Where to Sell Your Fur This Year

November 16, 2016 by Jeremiah 52 Comments

We’re at a low point in the fur market, which has those of us left trapping wondering where to sell fur this year.  If you’re fortunate enough to have a local fur buyer in your area, they can be a good dependable resource, both for selling fur and getting advice.  The trouble is that the low market has many local buyers sitting out of the game this year, and the ones who are speculating on fur aren’t going to be willing to pay much.

Regional fur buyers, like Groenewold Fur & Wool Co. are always buying, and again the prices are low, but you’ll be able to move fur and get some quick cash.  Check out the GFWCO website, or the recent posts here on Trapping Today for more on recent prices.

A lot of us are going to take a chance that the market will come back later in the season, and we’ll ship fur to Fur Harvesters Auction to sell on the auction block in late winter/early spring.  There’s always risk with this method, but with the market where it’s at, there isn’t a lot to lose.

For those looking for an alternative to these marketing channels, there’s always the option to tan your fur and sell it in specialty markets, or use it to make garments for sale. Once fur is tanned, it’s preserved for the long term, and gives you more time and options when it comes to marketing.

Looking for more?  You can find detailed information on all of these options for selling your fur in my book, Fur Profit.

Hey, the name’s Bob…… looking for a fur buyer in the Massachusetts area. Years ago my Grandfather used to buy fur, in the South coast area of Mass.(Between Boston & Cape Cod) I worked with him for years. up until the time of his passing in 1985. Thinking of getting into some Coyote hunting………… No one around my area, hunts anymore. Leg hold (Steel Jaw) traps were banned in Mass. in 1990…….. guess I’m the last of my kind in this area.

Does anyone buy rabbit hides in the Southeast? If so is there a particular breed you prefer? We have been raising rabbits for childrens pets, only due to not being quite ready for fur/meat processing and storage. We hope to be ready by late next summer or fall

Hi Amanda. I’m Matt from Vermont. I myself am a trapper. I have sold to Fur Harvesters Auction in North Bay Ontario.for about 20 years now. You might have to wait awhile for your money. Groenwold furs, Zander furs, and others buy furs. Try checking your states trapper association. They could help you find a local buyer I’m sure.
