Bobcats are bringing big money these days, especially for trappers in the West who catch those thick furred, clear spotted bellied cats that sometimes bring in excess of $1,000. But for any bobcat trapper, the difference between catching one and not can be a big deal. Bobcats are visual hunters, and a visual attractor placed in prime cat country will bring them in. That’s when lure can sometimes make or break a bobcat trapper. Having the right lure can add bobcats to your fur shed. Let’s take a look at some of the lures that can get the job done.
When looking for a trapping lure, there are two things you should consider: 1) how much experience is behind the lure, and 2) where do they trap? You want a lure developed by a trapper who has caught a lot of bobcats and had the opportunity to test it in a variety of conditions and with a large number of animals. You may also want to find a lure that’s been developed in the general area where you trap. That’s not to say a lure from Out West won’t work Back East, but in general, bobcats and their habits can vary a lot geographically, so some lures that work in one area may not work in another.
As far as I know, Slim Pederson has caught more bobcats in a single season than any other trapper. Slim obviously knows how to catch cats, and he makes lures that will help catch big numbers. Slim’s lures are tough to find, but you can buy them from a few suppliers. Here’s a link to a few of his bobcat lures: Kitty Curiosity Bobcat Gland Lure
Back in the day, Ray Milligan was an absolute animal when it came to bobcat trapping. His “Milligan Brand” lures have been extremely successful and stood the test of time. His Cat-Man-Do lure is one of the most popular bobcat lures around. He also makes a lighter version: Cat-Man-II.
Clint Locklear hit the bobcat trapping world with a bang, and in his effort to break Slim Pederson’s record single season bobcat catch, Clint gained a ton of experience bobcat trapping. He also developed some great lures in the process. His “Cat Collector” lure has been a hit for a long time, and is a safe bet for the bobcat trapper.
Craig O’Gorman is a legendary coyote trapper, lure maker, and overall great in the trapping industry. His “Powder River Cat Call” has accounted for a pile of bobcats over the years, and you can’t go wrong with one of Craig’s lures.
John Graham is quiet, and not the flashiest guy when it comes to promoting trapping lures, but through his predator control work and fur trapping over the years, Graham has trapped tons of bobcats. He knows his stuff, and he knows how to make great lures. John’s “Badlands Bob” bobcat gland lure is good stuff.
Trappers have trusted Herb Lenon’s lures for many decades, and Lenon’s Michigan-developed “Bobcat Super All Call” has been a steady producer over the years.
There are a ton of other great bobcat trappers who make lures worthy of a place in your lure bag. Quality lures are just one piece of the bobcat trapping puzzle, but sometimes they do make the difference, and can help put extra pelts on your stretchers.
