Trapping season officially began up here today with the opening of early fox and coyote trapping. Muskrat starts next week, and then the big season gets going the week after, when I’ll be out on the marten and fisher line in full force. Until then, my plan’s been to get things wrapped up around the house and farm before taking off to the woods on my days off. That means lots of chores, firewood, cattle fencing and so on. But I kept thinking about the idea that trapping season was open, and I wasn’t trapping. I had that nagging feeling in the back of my mind all day. The footholds were dyed and waxed, tools were ready, I had plenty of bait and lure and a bunch of dry dirt. So why wasn’t I putting em in the ground?
Finally, at the end of the day I put a couple of dirthole sets in behind the house. I don’t really expect anything, but sometimes you just have to scratch that itch and get some traps out…..at least until you get it out of your system!
Hope everyone else is either trapping or looking forward to the upcoming season.
