Trap Thieves Beware! Black Light Proves Trapper Right

August 19, 2012 by Trapper 9 Comments

It’s sweet justice for a Wisconsin trapper who was having issues with a thief on his trapline.  Turns out the savvy fellow found a creative way to prove that the traps at the thief’s house were his.  Here’s a summary:

DNR wardens seized three traps from Brown’s residence they believed had been stolen, although Brown claimed he owned the traps, according to the complaint. The victim identified the traps as his, noting that a black light revealed an ultraviolet marker he placed on two of them.

Brown has a pretrial conference scheduled in Jackson County Circuit Court for Aug. 22. Each misdemeanor count carries a minimum $300 fine and a five-year revocation of all hunting, fishing and trapping licenses.

Trap thieves beware!  I’d never heard of the UV marker trick, but I may try it if I ever get in this kind of jam.

Great story, but that is not why am commenting. I could not find a contact us, button so I guess I will use this pathway.
Never been on the site before, never heard of it. That is a shame, you have put a ton of work into your site, very nice job for the trappers out here. I know when you put this much work into a site like this, a lot of folks may read it, but not many “slap you on the back” for your effort. So I am giveing your virtual back slap.
keep up the work brother and have a great trapping season this year.

I have a question of a trapping problem I have.

I have done probably a 1000 Martens. I just did one and left out the belly board. Of course stuck solid. Tried most things.Placing in freezer. I heard of a trapper soaking it in water.
Any thoughs or; do you know of anyone with a solution.

Canadian Trapper, Yours in trapping, Lloyd

Hi Lloyd. Hope you found a solution to your problem. I have soaked furs in water and re-stretched them on the board when encountering that problem. Seemed to work for me. If you found a better solution please feel free to post it here.

I have never trapped a Martin, but I have forgotten the belly wedge on a few coon. My solution Wes place warm wet rags on belly side just long enough to slowly work a belly wedge into place. Remove wet rags and leave on board two or three days until pelt is dry again. Pelts came off with only slightly more difficulty than one done correctly from the beginning.

Wow, did not proof read or spell check.
Has any one else used my method? May not work on marten, don’t know how thick the Martin skin is. Size may also be a factor.

Seems like it would be more difficult to do that with marten since they go on the board fur out. In the past I have also used two-piece boards that spread at the base. This is a popular marten board used by Maine trappers and eliminates the need for a belly board.
